Expires: Sep 14, 2013

Description
Purpose:
The Computer Science and Mathematics Division in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate and the Climate Change Science Institute (http://climatechangescience.ornl.gov/) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop metrics of sustainability and resilience using global Earth system models.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work with a highly diverse team of climate and computational scientists to determine the extent to which high-resolution climate change models can improve upon global and regional (continental to watershed scale) climate change representation. This person will evaluate the response of the model to short term forcings, examine the ability of the model to properly simulate climate extremes and assess and apply the predicted climate response to produce metrics for sustainability and resilience. This involves working closely with staff at the Oak Ridge Climate Change Science Institute to create and run extended model configurations using recently developed features within the CESM to evaluate and assess the role of regional refinement and dynamic land surface model options for regional climate change prediction and to inform development of sustainability metrics occurring at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
A Ph.D. in environmental, Earth and atmospheric sciences, or statistics with a focus on the Earth system and/or analysis methods is required.  Experience with large-scale geophysical model development and analysis is required.  Experience with standard scientific programming languages used by the climate community (e.g. Fortran).  Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for working within a highly diverse team along with strong oral and written communications skills, good organizational skills, and a high degree of personal motivation.

Preferred Qualifications:
PHD in Civil Engineering with a focus on atmospheric or land surface.  Prefer experience with the Community Earth System Model, using Leadership Class Computing Facilities and a general background working with large-scale datasets and model configurations.  Proven analytical skills using relevant ESM specific software such as ncl, cdo, and netcdf are desired.  Parallel programming and analysis algorithm development is also desired.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered.

This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months.
